Alhamdulillah, I’ve had managed to get through 2 tough preclinical years but I forget the 3 coming years are much tougher than those 2.huhu.
My 1st day of 3rd year (clinical year to begin) was on 6 July 2009 after almost a month a very exciting and enjoying holidays. I can do whatever I want to and forget all about academic life. How obsessed am I towards a life without study..haha
A book by my favorite blogger and author-Sis Zabrina entitled Ramadan special-25 inspirational stories from ordinary life experiences. It is very simple and understandable-a preparation towards coming of Ramadan on 22th August 2009.
Ok. Let me tell you my entire journey within this four early day in clinical year. My batch is called THE PIONEER because we’re the first batch of dental students in UIA (basically called International Islamic university Malaysia-IIUM) by foreigners. It is important to realize that the first batch is also experimental batch. Yes, a number of experiments were conducted on us such as the number of professional exam, silibus, holiday and doing CPR course at Terendak Camp.
In fact we, dental students have 5 pro exams compared to 2 pro exams of medical students. Should we have break after each end block exam or pro exam but we didn’t have. And we are the first dental students to attend the basic life support programme including CPR course at terendak Camp-the most challenging 6 days in my life.
Ok. In 3rd year, we join medic 3rd year, so it is compulsory for all of us to follow the schedule of medic and it is really stressful in 1st day to learn in same class as medical students because we are treated the same as medic. And many things we missed actually because the proportion subject that we learn is not the same.
For example, medic stresses on all part of the body where as dental stresses on head and neck and not pays much attention on other systems as the course don’t need that knowledge as much as medical students need. A bit confusion right to choose what to learn and what to stress on when we are in the same class as medical students.
Now we are in 3rd year, so we have elementary posting for 4 weeks together with medical students. Basically what is emphasised is on history taking. Most important in in develop rapport with a patient. It is applied in all medical and dental career.
Basically the classs starts at 830am and ended at 4pm. But afternoon class is more on ward round to see patient at HTAA.
Even though class starts at 830am, we are ready to go to class at 715am, afraid of no parking available. I go to JHC with my friend’s car afraid of the hectic traffic congestion and how the driver on Malaysia drive-very dangerous way if I use my motorcycle.
Last week we, group E2 didn’t have the chance yet to see patient yet-we already had 2 session –general examination and cardiovascular examination. Both were conducted in JHC by Dr Anis and DR Harrris.
In the examintion the most important thing is to follow step so that we won’t miss anything important during procedure. Then, must be gentle. What Dr Harris said was, many students tend to be nervous during examination thus don’t able to complete short case examintation (usually in 10 min) due to nervousness.
Dr said that is patient start to feel pain-they say ‘Aaa” then we are ‘out’-meaning that fail exam and should wait for another year examination. Wow..very chalengging!
